


Sebastian gives just enough at the end of the each book to connect to the next installment and keep you eager to see what will happen next. There are no major cliff-hangers, which made the wait between books bearable. Each book encompasses it owns narrative, which is wrapped up in a satisfying manner. Plotįor the most part, the plot of Ash Princess is straightforward and follows familiar beats to other YA novels. And they kindle a new plan, not one of escape but taking back her throne. They kindle the calling of the regal blood flowing in her veins. Together, these events kindle Thora’s hope and her transition back into Theodosia. The story takes off quickly with a few key events: the death of the most notorious leader of the Astrean rebellion, Ampelio the return of the Kaiser’s son, Søren and the sudden appearance of Thora’s childhood friend Blaise, who seeks to rescue her. Thora has stayed silent, acting the part the Kaiser wants her to play. She even has a friend: Crescentia, the daughter of the Theyn who executed her mother. Thora has been a captive in a golden cage for 10 years. And her back bears the scars of every attempt of rebellion or crime the Kaiser has faced and put down this past decade. She is a toy and symbol of her fallen people. Now called Thora, she lives in her dead mother’s castle under the Kaiser’s thumb. Six years old at the time, Theodosia was beaten until she forgot her name.
